Heading to Gastonia's Fourth of July Festival? Don't Let Back Pain Slow You Down

Family watching fireworksGastonia knows how to celebrate. Between the parade, live entertainment, food vendors, family activities, and fireworks, most people spend the better part of the Fourth on their feet. The problem is that most people don’t give a second thought to how their body is holding up until they wake up the next morning wondering what the heck happened to their back.

At Bannon Clinic of Chiropractic, P.A., it’s one of the most common things we hear after a long holiday weekend. It’s exactly the kind of thing chiropractic care can help address before it turns into something that lingers.

A full day of holiday activities puts more physical demand on your spine and joints than you might expect. The good news? A little preparation goes a long way.

Why Holiday Events Can Trigger Pain

Think about what a typical Fourth of July actually involves: standing for long stretches while waiting for the parade, walking farther than usual, carrying lawn chairs and coolers from the car, sitting on blankets or uneven ground for hours, and long car rides to and from celebrations.

None of those things sounds like a big deal on its own. Put them all together over eight or ten hours, and your spine, hips, and neck feel it. Especially if you already deal with back pain, neck pain, sciatica, or arthritis.

Don’t Ignore Early Warning Signs

The discomfort most people wake up with on July 5th didn’t actually start overnight. It built up throughout the day in small, easy-to-ignore ways. Pay attention to:

  • Stiffness in the lower back
  • Tight shoulders or neck muscles
  • Headaches that come on later in the day
  • Hip discomfort when standing or walking
  • Pain when getting up after sitting on the ground
  • Tingling and numbness in the legs

Catching these signs early and doing something about them is much easier than trying to undo several days of lingering soreness after the holiday.

Tips for Staying Comfortable During the Festivities

Wear the Right Shoes

This one gets overlooked every year. Sandals and flip flops are popular for a reason, but if you’re planning to walk or stand for several hours, choose footwear with real cushioning and stability. (Your lower back will thank you by about hour four.) If you’ve been dealing with foot, ankle, or back issues, it may also be worth asking about custom orthotics. Dr. Bannon and Dr. Katro fit patients with orthotics that help stabilize the feet and keep the entire spine properly aligned from the ground up.

Take Movement Breaks

Sitting on a blanket or in a folding chair waiting for fireworks to begin sounds restful. In practice, staying in one position too long stiffens up the hips, glutes, and lower back. Get up, walk around a bit, and give your body a chance to reset.

Lift Smart

Loading coolers, hauling folding chairs, carrying bags from the parking lot—all of that lifting adds up. Bend at the knees, keep the load close to your body, and avoid twisting while you’re picking something up.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration affects muscle function and joint health more than most people realize, and summer heat increases the risk of muscle tightness and cramping throughout the day.

Enjoy the Holiday and Take Care of Your Spine

As a runner, cyclist, and outdoor enthusiast, Dr. Bannon genuinely believes that staying active is one of the best investments you can make in your health. He also knows the body needs a little attention to keep up with the demands we put on it.

“A full day outdoors is wonderful for you, but the body doesn’t always communicate how it’s doing until the next morning. A few simple habits during the day can make a real difference in how you feel when you wake up on July 5th,” says Gastonia chiropractor Dr. Timothy Bannon.

If back pain, neck stiffness, headaches, or joint soreness are keeping you from fully enjoying the celebrations you look forward to all year, the team at Bannon Clinic of Chiropractic, P.A. is here to help. From a quick post-holiday adjustment to a more complete evaluation of what’s been bothering you, we’re committed to helping Gastonia-area families stay active and feeling their best.
